This Seminar is for Special Education Teachers and/or School Leaders at Post Primary Level
Some seminars will be delivered as short sessions over a number of days. Applicants are advised to ensure they are aware of the requirement for attendance at all sessions prior to registering for seminars. Session details for this event are provided below.
Seminar Content and Anticipated Outcomes
This seminar will provide an understanding of the current landscape in education and will set the context for whole school and individual planning for the teaching and learning of students with special educational needs (SEN) with particular emphasis on the deployment of Special Needs Assistants.
Anticipated Outcomes
Participants will:
• Develop a further understanding of SEN in the current
educational landscape.
• Further inform an understanding of the context for whole school
planning for students with SEN and individual planning in light of
recent legislation and circulars.
• Develop an understanding of the relationships between roles in
Special Education, with specific reference to the roles and
functions of the Special Needs Assistant, the Special Education
Teacher, the mainstream teacher, and the school Principal.
• Develop an understanding of identification, assessment, target
setting and monitoring of progress and outcomes for students
with SEN.
• Engage in individual student case studies.
• Explore planning and the effective deployment of SNAs.
• Reflection on own school setting
Seminar Outline and Content
• Examining the current role of SEN within the Irish education
system.
• Overview of the role of SEN in whole school planning.
• Understanding the role of the Special Needs Assistance, Special
Education Teacher and School Principal
• Examining the effective deployment of SNAs in schools
• Explaining the range of case studies.
• Examining the role of individual planning for students with SEN.
• Identification of targets and actions for students with SEN.
• Outlining the importance of monitoring and review of progress.
An NCSE Certificate of Attendance is available to participants.
Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this seminar will only be allowed to classroom teachers with primary responsibility for students with a special educational need and if it is deemed essential by the Principal.
Typically, substitution will only be allocated to non-substitute teachers. Payment is not available to teachers in a substitute capacity.
