Music in Motion: An exciting and practical programme to enhance musical skills and develop confidence in teaching music.

Relax and rejuvenate on your summer course!

Adults who listen to music significantly reduce their cortisol levels, lowering stress or anxiety. When we hear music that we enjoy, our brain also releases the chemical dopamine which positively effects our mood. Boost your overall well-being and be happy on your summer course this year by registering for Music in Motion with Aisling Beecher.

Course description:

Music has a positive impact on learning and on the social, emotional and psychological development of children. This practical and music-making course will ensure that all teachers, particularly those who don’t have a musical background, are equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to deliver music lessons with confidence to all primary level students.

Participants will become familiar with key concepts, such as musical elements and musical theory, will develop a bank of resources which they can draw from as they plan, and discover engaging approaches to teaching music in their classroom. The course will focus on all three strands of the music curriculum and will involve active participation in singing, conducting, playing percussion instruments, improvising and composing. Participants will also discover how to integrate literacy and numeracy development into music lessons, particularly in the context of the Primary Language Curriculum, while also becoming familiar with strategies to incorporate music into the daily routine of school and developing thematic lessons with a musical aspect. Finally, teachers will be invited to self-reflect on their own teaching of the music curriculum in relation to the SSE teaching and learning framework.

On completion of this course, participants will be enabled to:

  • Appraise and evaluate the importance of Music as a subject within the primary school curriculum as a result of the positive social, emotional, cognitive, physical, therapeutic and psychological effects of music.
  • Engage their students in practical music making and create exceptional musical experiences in their school, having developed the teacher’s own confidence, expertise and enjoyment of music through performance, composition and listening activities.
  • Identify and apply a range of music skills and plan activities to develop them.
  • Understand the musical elements and develop appropriate ways to experience them with an integrated approach to the three strands.
  • Confidently deliver a range of exciting and meaningful music lessons which address the three strands of the music curriculum and are relevant in our technologically advanced society.
  • Develop an awareness of how music can be integrated across the curriculum to enhance literacy and numeracy skills and supplement other subject areas.

This course will be facilitated by Aisling Beecher.

Aisling currently works as a primary school teacher in Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann, Midleton, Co. Cork. As an accomplished musician, she conducts, directs and accompanies choirs around Cork.
