Music in Motion: An exciting and practical programme to enhance musical skills and develop confidence in teaching music.
Music has a positive impact on learning and on the social, emotional and psychological development of children. This practical and music-making course will ensure that all teachers, particularly those who don’t have a musical background, are equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to deliver music lessons with confidence to all primary level students.
Participants will become familiar with key concepts, such as musical elements and musical theory, will develop a bank of resources which they can draw from as they plan, and discover engaging approaches to teaching music in their classroom. The course will focus on all three strands of the music curriculum and will involve active participation in singing, conducting, playing percussion instruments, improvising and composing. Participants will also discover how to integrate literacy and numeracy development into music lessons, particularly in the context of the Primary Language Curriculum, while also becoming familiar with strategies to incorporate music into the daily routine of school and developing thematic lessons with a musical aspect. Finally, teachers will be invited to self-reflect on their own teaching of the music curriculum in relation to the SSE teaching and learning framework.
On completion of this course, participants will be enabled to:
About the course tutor:
Aisling Beecher currently works as a primary school teacher in Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann, Midleton, Co. Cork. As an accomplished pianist, she conducts, directs and accompanies choirs at her school, and around Cork. Aisling holds a Diploma in Piano Performance from Trinity College London, and also achieved her Grade 8 in Piano and Flute at the Cork School of Music. For this reason, she delights in bringing her love for music to the pupils in her school.
Aisling was awarded the College Medal and the Medal for Music at her graduation from Mary Immaculate College in 2011, as a result of receiving first place in both the B.Ed. class and the Music Arts Class. Since then, she graduated from her Masters in Education at Frostburg State University, Maryland, U.S.A in 2013, and is currently researching if songs can be used as a medium to facilitate language learning as part of her Ph.D. at Mary Immaculate College.
Aisling has presented at Frostburg Children’s Literature Conference on the power and possibilities of wordless books in the classroom. She was also involved in organising children’s literature events and conferences in Frostburg and at Mary Immaculate College, such as the Buzzing with Books Conference in 2014. Aisling has also created professional development videos and support material for the NCCA Primary Language Curriculum.
