Course description

Teaching Chess in Primary Schools

This course on teaching chess in primary schools is aimed at both teachers who know how to play chess and those who do not. Recent research in a number of countries has shown that regular chess practice results in increased scores in literacy and numeracy.

The course will teach all participants how to

  •          play chess and the best methods of teaching primary school children the rules using a fun, games-based approach
  •          utilise chess as an additional resource in teaching both literacy and numeracy in the mainstream and special education classroom
  •          organise a school chess club, school chess team and chess competitions
  •          Soft-copy resources will be provided to participants also which can be used by teachers to teach chess in the classroom or as part of a school chess club

This course has been successfully run in Kildare, Dublin, Meath, Laois and Waterford. The course is fun, hands-on with little or no note-taking as all resources are provided digitally.
