Pathways to Freedom 1913-1923

This course plots events in Cork during the tumultuous decade 1913 to 1923, comparing/contrasting with events nationally. From the formation of the Cork corps of the Volunteers in 1913, Easter Week 1916, Rise of Sinn Fein, War of independence and Civil War – we will visit sites associated with these events. Site visits will include St. Finbarr’s Cemetery/UCC /Cork Public Museum/Passage West Museum, a full day visit to Spike Island/Ambush Sites at Clonmult, Dripsey, Mourneabbey, Kilmichael , Béal na Bláth and also Kilmurry Independence Museum. Participants will increase their knowledge of these events and assess the suitability of these historical sites for class visits.

A willingness to travel (in own transport) is required – we go, whatever the weather!
