Word Study for Phonics and Spelling Instruction

In this interactive workshop, you will learn the principles of word study, including how to explicitly and effectively teach phonics and spelling using a variety of evidence-based practices, including orthographic mapping, word ladders for both decoding and encoding, and word sorts.

Discussion points will include

(1) How to use a developmental framework to identify what the next instructional step is for your students who struggle, and

(2) A brief introduction to 2 well-known literacy approaches/programs we use the in the West Chester University Reading Center with students who struggle developing their literacy skills: word study (Words Their Way) and the UFLI phonics lesson plan.

Dr. Kevin Flanigan is a professor in the literacy department at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He works in the WCU Reading Center, where he and master’s students work with children who struggle to read and write. A former middle-grades classroom teacher and reading specialist/literacy coach, his scholarship focuses on developmental word knowledge, effective vocabulary instruction, and literacy interventions. He has authored or co-authored articles in The Reading Teacher, The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and the Journal of Literacy Research and is a co-author of Assessment for Reading Instruction, Vocabulary Their Way, and Words Their Way With Struggling Readers. He has also developed and taught Building a Better Vocabulary for The Great Courses.
