AI and SEN - Two Sessions - One Event

Target audience - Primary Teachers and SNAs

Session 1 - Everyday SEN in the Classroom

This session introduces simple, practical approaches to supporting students with Special Educational Needs in the mainstream classroom.

Teachers will explore everyday strategies that:
● improve engagement,
● reduce overwhelm,
● and build independence and confidence for diverse learners.

The session breaks down complex SEN concepts into clear, relatable ideas and focuses on what teachers can do tomorrow, not on theory. The aim is to create a supportive, inclusive classroom environment where every student feels understood, capable, and successful.

Bio: John Murphy is an educator with over 20 years’ experience in Ireland and internationally. He began his career in the UK before teaching across Europe and Southeast Asia, developing extensive expertise in inclusive practice and educational leadership.
Since returning to Ireland, John has specialised exclusively in Special Education, completing postgraduate studies in Inclusive and Special Education and working in both mainstream and special school contexts across Cork.
John’s approach is practical and grounded, focusing on small, meaningful adjustments that teachers and SNAs can use immediately to support diverse learners. His work centres on realistic strategies that build confidence, connection, and genuine inclusion for every student.

Session 2 - AI tools that will enhance teaching, learning and assessment

This session will focus on AI tools that will enhance teaching, learning and assessment. Participants will learn how to use tools such as Brisk Teaching, Canva, Notebook LM and Gemini.

Teachers will explore AI-powered resources to generate engaging activities and design assessments quickly.

Teachers will discover AI tools for interactive learning, including those for creating podcasts, creating teaching resources and developing personalised learning experiences.

Bio: Patrick Hickey is a primary school teacher with over 10 years of teaching experience. He has a huge passion for using technology to enhance teaching, learning and assessment. He is also very interested in teacher identity and is currently completing a PhD on the experiences of teachers with physical disabilities.
