25-8288-AUT- An Introduction to How to See Numbers in Nature

An Introduction to How to See Numbers in Nature and Where to Find Them Bringing Numbers and Nature together. Using visual prompts and tips this presentation will outline the beginning steps involved in seeing number symmetries in the natural world. It is an introductory exploration into geometric number signatures that permeate the natural world all around us. Understanding this approach opens the door to nature observation within the maths curriculum. We come to recognise number signatures and deepen our understanding of numbers. This concept explores the areas of Shape & Space and Transformation within the primary maths curriculum. It also encourages the Working Scientifically and Living Things strands of SESE. There is a language available to us in the natural world. A language of shape and symmetry. That language is everywhere around us, we just need to know how to look.
Lisa Lillywhite and The Smart Happy Project Lisa started The Smart Happy Project to share the wonders of natural shapes and patterns to all ages. Following a design career Lisa turned her designer’s eye to nature and saw the symmetries in nature available to us. Hedgerows and seashores became the field study of seeing geometries in nature and matching those with the numbers her children learnt in classrooms. Through thesmarthappyproject.com Lisa shares her understanding of shapes and numbers in nature. She offers activities online and brings events into schools such as the Triangles in Nature workshop for Maths Week. This academic year Lisa is also resident artist in Cork schools through the TAP+ partnership program
