National Office for Suicide Prevention - safeTALK

Course description

safeTALK Post Primary School Training for Staff

The Department of Education and Skills and the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP), in partnership with the network of Education Centres, will offer a training programme in safeTALK during the 2017/18 school year. This safeTALK training is funded by the Department and the HSE’s National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP) as part of Connecting for Life, Ireland’s National Strategy to Reduce Suicide 2015-2020.

safeTALK has an awareness and training focus; participants learn to recognise and engage persons who might be having thoughts of suicide and to connect them with individuals in the community who are trained to provide suicide intervention(s). After training, participants in the safeTALK programme should be able to:

•              Challenge attitudes that inhibit open talk about suicide.

•              Recognise a person who might be having thoughts of suicide.

•              Engage them in direct and open talk about suicide.

•              Listen to the person’s feelings about suicide to show that they are taken seriously.

The safeTALK training is provided free of charge and is delivered by personnel from NOSP. Under Connecting for Life, NOSP is also responsible for monitoring and evaluating activities that may help to reduce the rate of suicide in Ireland. Consequently those who attend training will be asked to participate in an evaluation and complete a short on-line questionnaire before and after training and at 6 months follow-up. The questionnaire is deigned to measure changes in participants’ attitudes, knowledge and skills.

Substitution cover is available for participants and travel is paid under the usual DES conditions.

Schools are invited to send a relevant member of staff to participate in safeTALK training. Where possible, sending two teachers per school is encouraged. Having completed the training, each teacher should be in a position to implement safeTALK so that it is of greatest benefit to the school population.
